North Attleborough officials report that the Town will extend its detour route on Broadway during the partial demolition of the Webster Mill Building.

Beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, March 4, the detour route on Broadway will be extended from Richards Avenue to Roosevelt Avenue. A detour sign will be placed at Eddy Street allowing residents to go downtown or take Roosevelt Avenue to continue onto Broadway. Only residential traffic will be allowed on Broadway between Roosevelt Avenue and the corner of Bank Street. Bank Street will also be closed to through traffic with a detour at Ralph Street.

The extended detour will remain in effect while demolition work is being conducted on Monday, March 4, between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Tuesday, March 5, between 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Road closure and detour signage will be posted in the area and there will be a police detail present on Monday and Tuesday. Residents are asked to avoid the area and remain at least 100 feet back from the barriers.

On Thursday, Feb. 29, the owners of the Webster Mill failed to respond within the 24-hour period to the Town’s notification of its intent to demolish the portion of the building that is in imminent danger of collapsing into the public way.

The Town of North Attleborough has scheduled the demolition of the three-story portion of the building closest to Broadway beginning Monday, March 4 through Tuesday, March 5.

The Town of North Attleborough continues to collaborate with its Health Department, Licensed Site Professional, the Massachusetts Department of Enviromental Protection and State Building Inspector to address any pests or asbestos concerns related to the building's partial demolition.

A pest control perimeter has been established and pest monitoring will be conducted throughout the end of March to prevent the possible spread of pests into other areas of town.

During the partial demolition, water will be sprayed onto the building to prevent the spread of asbestos into the air and a cover will be placed on top of the debris to mitigate any further spread. Air quality monitoring will also be conducted during and after the demolition process.

Once the demolition is completed, the Town will resecure the perimeter surrounding the property with fencing and collaborate with the owners to address the remaining structure.

“Since learning of the imminent threat that the Webster Mill poses to the public safety, the Town has taken swift action in collaboration with our local and state partners to begin the partial demolition of the building,” Town Manager Michael Borg said. “We are committed to ensuring that all public safety and health protocols are followed during the demolition process, and we will continue to work with the owners to clean up the property and put it back into use. In the meantime, we ask that community members do not go onto the property as its unsafe to do so.”
