NORTH ATTLEBORO, MA--- Fire Chief Christopher Coleman reports that the North Attleboro Fire Department extinguished a multi-family house fire on Park Street that displaced 16 residents this morning.
At 6:48 a.m., North Attleboro Fire received a report of smoke coming from a two-and-a-half-story house at 76 Park St.
Upon arrival, first responders observed heavy smoke coming from the home's third floor. Engine 5 and Rescue 1 immediately brought a hose line up to the third-floor apartment where a fire was discovered in a bedroom.
Rescue 2 searched the home for residents, while Ladder 1 ventilated the building and Engine 2 secured a water supply from a nearby hydrant.
All residents, 10 adults and six children, were at home and able to safely exit prior to firefighters’ arrival. One male occupant was transported to a local hospital to be treated for injuries sustained during the fire.
No other injuries were reported.
The first and second floors of the home sustained water and smoke damage as well. The house has been deemed inhabitable at this time. The American Red Cross is assisting the 16 residents who have been displaced.
Mutual aid was provided by the Plainville, Foxboro, Attleboro and Lincoln, Rhode Island Fire Departments. Mansfield MEMA Rehab and Providence Canteen Rehab also responded to the scene. Station coverage was provided by the Attleboro, Mansfield and Smithfield, Rhode Island Fire Departments.
“Our aggressive response to this fire highlighted the importance of fire department staffing levels. By being fully staffed, we were able to conduct a coordinated attack that included us advancing hose lines, conducting searches and ventilating the building to prevent the fire from spreading while ensuring all occupants were safely evacuated,” Chief Coleman said. “We would also like to stress the importance of smoke detectors as they were able to alert the residents to the fire and give them time to evacuate safely.”
The fire is under investigation by the North Attleborough Fire Department and the State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office. According to the preliminary investigation, the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
