The Solid Waste Department announces that the Recycling Center will be closed on Monday, Jan. 1, in observance of New Year's Day. Curbside Trash and Recycling will have a one-day delay during the week of January 1st.

Excess Trash? Don’t get caught without overflow trash bags or bag tags! Official North Attleboro overflow trash bags and bag tags are sold at The Solid Waste Department (777 Mt. Hope Street), Shaw’s Supermarket (Triboro Plaza) and Super Stop & Shop (North Attleboro & South Attleboro). Just town overflow bags sold at: Bob’s Market, CVS Pharmacy# 938 (North Attleboro), Market Basket (South Attleboro), Super Stop & Shop (Plainville), and The Meat Bar Marketplace. Thank you for keeping the lid of your trash cart closed.
Gift Bags, Wrapping Paper, Ribbon, Bows, and Tissue Paper: Once everyone has opened their gifts, what do you do with the piles of wrapping paper, ribbons, bows, and tissue paper? Reuse, reuse, reuse! Gift bags can be used for years along with refolded tissue paper. For anything that’s been broken, ripped, or can no longer be reused, here’s what you need to know. Gift bags can go in the recycling as long as there is no metallic ink, foil or glitter on them, in which case, they go in the trash. Don’t forget to cut those string handles off your gift bags before recycling! Wrapping paper, tissue paper, ribbon, and bows that are ready for retirement go in the trash as well.
Packing Peanuts, Bubble Wrap, and Padded Envelopes: Boxes and packaging are unavoidable during the gift-giving season. If you do receive a package, remember to flatten all cardboard boxes before putting them in the recycling bin – do not nest boxes within each other and please remember to take all the packing material out before it goes in the recycling bin. Packing peanuts and any paper envelopes with plastic padding on the inside go in the trash. Bubble wrap and fully plastic padded envelopes can be brought back to your supermarket to be properly recycled along with plastic wrap and plastic bags.
Extra Cardboard or Large Cardboard Boxes: Do you have cardboard that cannot fit in your recycling cart? Residents that have a current Recycling Center sticker affixed to their vehicle’s window can bring cardboard to the Recycling Center during normal business hours. Before taking the cardboard to the Recycling Center, please remember to first remove packing materials, such as Styrofoam or packing peanuts, and flatten the boxes. The cardboard must be no larger than 3’x3’ so it will fit in the cardboard compactor!
Paper Plates, Plastic Utensils, and Paper Napkins and Cups: We know that disposable plates, utensils, napkins, and cups make clean up easy, but unfortunately, most of that stuff cannot be recycled. All disposable paper products go in the trash. Plastic cups made of polystyrene (colored cups, or those that crack or crinkle when squeezed) also go in the trash. Clear plastic cups that easily squeeze in your hand, and aluminum cups, can be recycled. Consider using reusable tableware whenever possible.
Greeting Cards: Spreading holiday cheer is one of the best ways to celebrate this special time of year. Greeting cards and their envelopes are recyclable unless there is metallic ink, foil or glitter on them or photo paper, in which case, they go in the trash. Watch out for cards with button batteries. Button batteries do NOT go in the recycling or trash because they can cause fires. The Recycling Center has a special collection box for these types of batteries where they can be dropped off free of charge.
Christmas Trees: The North Attleboro High School Hockey Team is running their annual Curbside Christmas Tree Pickup/Recycling fundraiser this year. For a suggested donation of $15.00, you can leave your tree at the curb and the NAHS Hockey Team will haul it away to the Town Compost Site. The NAHS Hockey Teams raise money each year to financially support the cost of ice time and JV league fees. They appreciate any and all of your support! A reservation for tree removal is required. Please email your name, address, and phone number to: NAHShockeyboosters2@gmail.com by Friday, January 5. Only North Attleboro residents can participate. You will receive a confirmation of the reservation. Please be sure to confirm that your information is correct!
On Sunday, January 7th, please place your tree at the curb and tape your donation to your front door by 10:00 AM. Cash and checks made payable to “North Attleboro Hockey Boosters” are accepted. Don’t worry, an email reminder will be sent out! Also, residents can drop off their live Christmas trees at the snow lot, next to the Highway Garage on Smith Street. Please make sure there is no tinsel, lights or decorations on the tree.
String Christmas Lights and Extension Cords: Though beautiful on your house, tree and mantel, string lights don’t belong in your recycling bin. They wrap around machinery at your local recycling facility, causing sorting to come to a grinding halt. The Recycling Center has a wheeled cart designated for Christmas lights and extension cords for residents to drop off free of charge. It does not matter if the lights work or not, we will take them. Rope lights are not accepted.
Textiles: Deck the Halls with Giving – Donate clothing, share warmth! This Holiday season let’s decorate our hearts with acts of kindness. The Recycling Center has a CMRK donation bin where you can donate your gently used clothing and shoes to spread warmth and make a difference in your community.
The Solid Waste Department would also like to remind residents that curbside trash and recycling carts must be 3 feet apart from any obstacles, including other carts. Thank you for setting your carts out with enough distance between them to allow the Town’s Contractor to access the carts. The lids on the wheeled carts should be completely closed and the handle and wheels should face away from the street.
